'The Great Highland Famine'
by
T. M. Devine - Paperback 1996 This is a specialist work for those with an
academic interest in the topic. It written in the scholarly style, and is
thus more difficult to read than, say, John Prebble's "Highland
Clearances". However, this takes nothing away from its systematic
illustration of the complex series of events that others, and popular
culture, have often reduced to simplistic factors. Excellent
in its coverage and essential reading for anyone with an interest in the
topic. |

The Lithuanians in Scotland
by John Millar, Jonas Stepsis
Paperback - 172 pages (29 April, 1998)
House of Lochar
Reviews
Book Description
The immigrants from Lithuania who arrived in Scotland towards the end of Queen Victoria's reign were part of a general wave of emigration from eastern Europe; many arrived with little more than a willingness to work. The author (aka Jonas Stepsis) is a Lithuanian Scot and he tells the story of his parents' generation - how they struggled to survive and build a new life in the strange and often hostile environment of industrial Scotland and how they managed to preserve their language, culture and traditions. The earliest memories of the Lithuanian community have been obtained through personal interviews and are combined with factual detail from statistical research and contemporary sources.
Synopsis
This is the history of a small community which survived persecution and deprivation to build a new life in alien surroundings. The immigrants were met with hostility and naked xenophobia. Keir Hardie tried to raise the rabble against them for "growing fat on four shillings a week". The Lithuanian community, however, made a strong contribution to modern Scotland. The sons and daughters of that community are now fully integrated into the nation, but this is a record of the early years.
From the Publisher
Although rather a specialised subject, this is a splendid book which has been well received.
From the Back Cover
John Millar is a Scot born of parents who left Lithuania before the Great War to escape persecution and find empkloyment in industrial central Scotland. Through a selection of reminiscences from members of the Lithuanian community in Scotland andf his own detailed research he traces their struggle for survival in an alien world. As Brian Wilson says in his Foreword " It is a story... full of authentic voices which remind us that our communities are made up of many peoples..."

"... a speech by (Keir) Hardie himself: 'In former years if a slave escaped in America and crossed to Canada he was a free man, but here we have a batch of men labelled "Glengarnock, Ayrshire" and sent from their homes into our midst for the purpose of bringing you down, if possible, to their level. The authorities are at fault to allow it in view of their filthy habits." p67, an example of a xenophobic speech to a miners' meeting.

'The Mark of the Scots' by
Duncan A. Bruce - Paperback
1998 Comments:- The most enjoyable history book
ever written.
I know of nothing ever written of any people that has been as fascinating
and enlightening as Duncan Bruce's "The Mark of the Scots". This
should be required reading for all, especially in schools in the USA. The
complete story of the part which the Scots have played in world history is
an unbelievable but true fact which should be made known to everyone. |

'Standards of Living in the Late
Middle Ages'
by Christopher Dyer - - Paperback
1989 This book
explores the material realities of everyday life in English society
between 1200 and 1520. It looks in turn at aristocrats, peasants, townsmen
and paupers and examines how they obtained and spent their incomes. The
available evidence of their food, possessions and housing is also
analyzed. The focus of the book is on the varying fortunes of different
social groups during the inflation of the 13th century, the crises of the
14th and the apparent depression of the 15th. Dr Dyer explains the changes
not just by the accidents of weather and disease but also in terms of the
dynamics of a social and economic system subjected to stimuli and
stresses. As a consequence of discussing material life, the book
necessarily touches on problems of social mentality and psychology. |

"In Pursuit of
Sir William Wallace"
by Craufuird C. Loudoun
This book has been well researched and details many
places that Sir William Wallace was reputed to have been throughout his
life. Maps and descriptions have been added for the reader's benefit, so
that the trail can be followed to seek out the history. The question of
Wallace's birthplace has been answered here, although I'm sure the subject
will lead to more controversy. A well written, clear and concise book with
all the detail required for a reader new to the subject.
