Machrie is divided into four districts - Tormore, Auchengallon, Auchencar, and Dougarie. It is mainly a farming community with sheep and beef the main products.

A nine hole golf course was opened in 1900.

The Dukes of Hamilton built the shooting lodge at Dougarie.

The stone circle at Auchengallon and the series of circles on Machrie Moor are among the most remarkable archaeological sites on the Island.
