Saltcoats Ecclesiastical Timeline

       Significant Dates in the History of Saltcoats Churches

 

1140

Granting of charter to Kilwinning Abbey.

 

1744 The Second Parochial Church  is abandoned at the Stanley Clachan in Ardrossan and the Third Parochial Church built in Saltcoats at the site of the present North Ayrshire Museum. The population at this time was increasing much faster in the Saltcoats part of Ardrossan Parish.

 

1773 The Fourth Parochial Church was rebuilt on the same site as the third.

 

1843 Free Church built.
1856 St Mary's Catholic Church built.

 

1863 Congregational Church built.

 

1856 The Churchyard at the Parochial Church in Saltcoats was filling up and a new burial ground was opened, situated at the upper corner of one of the fields attached to the farm of Parkhouse in Ardrossan.
1907 St Cuthbert's South Beach Church built

 

1908 Ardrossan Parish Church closed. It is now the North Ayrshire Museum.
